Innovative eLearning platforms at Mondragon University

IT-supported learning processes in organizations can play an important role because an up-to-date learning concepts in combination with modern technology solutions can contribute to approaches for different learning scenarios because they create new opportunities of networking, group formation, cooperative learning and can serve as source for meaningful learning data that can later be analyzed to enhance the learning process.

Following this idea, the aim of two different projects at Mondragon Unibertsitatea: Sc@lern http://www.scalearn.com/ and 3DTutor  is the personalization of the content of e-learning platforms to the student learning profile. In the first one, Sc@lern, already finished, was more focus on student profiling using data mining methods. These technologies were used to mine the extensive amount of information that is acquired during a distant learning process. The goal of this mining process was to make available a wide range of detailed information regarding the learning activity and suggestions for the agents involved in the learning process.

In the second project, 3DTutor, using some of the process developed for the previous one, the main goal is dedicated to the use of avatars in order to improve the quality of the interaction of the student with the learning platform. The avatar will be continuously attending student specific enquirers but it also have some proactive characteristics, this way, he will make some suggestions to the students according to specific event detected in their personal  learning process. Expected improvements for the learning process will be:  commitment, focus on the content and make the learning process more interesting. It also will help students learn better, teachers teach better, and school systems to become more effective with the support of these tools. One of the main challenges is to develop a system able to be used in any platform. The avatar is able to express emotions and uses AIML (Artificial Intelligence Mark-up Language) patterns to be able to establish a conversation using natural language.
