Not having Fukushima around killed 1200 persons."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everybody can remember the nuclear accident of Fukushima. First came the earthquake, then the tsunami, and this took structural damage to the central. The cooling cycle failed and radiation was freed to the ocean and the atmosphere. The question, some years later: what were the consequences?\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/live.staticflickr.com\/65535\/49020833032_cd4f220264_b_d.jpg\" width=\"588\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Nobody died during the incident<\/strong>. The radiation that was released into the air didn&#8217;t kill anybody, and it doesn&#8217;t seem like the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2017\/03\/09\/ciencia\/1489057242_612605.html\">diseases<\/a>\u00a0increased, not at least if we look at related ones like tiroid cancer. There were no victim amongst the firefigthers nor during the explosions. Some researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2012\/ee\/c2ee22019a#!divAbstract\">say<\/a>\u00a0(but don&#8217;t confirm) that radiation killed 130 people, even if that number hasn&#8217;t been oficially recognized and it doesn&#8217;t seem easy to relate the data.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the accident left some unexpected consequences:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/plus\/images\/0518d9a8-20aa-4eee-930b-03c45c5e80fb_w620_r1_fpx32_fpy84.jpg\" width=\"402\" height=\"402\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It caused a nuclear blindness: the nuclear centrals of the country shut down.<\/li>\n<li>In order to produce the necessary electricity, \u00abmore coal was burned\u00bb, meaning that the production of the thermal centrals was increased (which use coal and natural gas as fuel).<\/li>\n<li>This increased the price of the electricity, and made it impossible for some families to pay for this bill. As a consequence, some died of cold.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ftp.iza.org\/dp12687.pdf\">research<\/a>\u00a0says that it was 1200 the number of persons that died because of this. The numbers may not be 100% accurate, but there&#8217;s one thing clear: <strong>the cold killed more persons than the nuclear dissaster<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>(There are some other estimations, those saying that the displacement caused by the accident brought 1000 deaths. We will probably never know for sure, but it seems clear that there&#8217;s a relationship there.)<\/p>\n<p>Nuclear energy helps keeping the energy at lower prices, and it keeps the emissions down. In return, there&#8217;s a security issue (waste, accidents, terrorism) that it&#8217;s being dealt with in quite a satisfactory way these days.\u00a0\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/jrc\/sites\/jrcsh\/files\/styles\/normal-responsive\/public\/fotolia_98240623_coal_power_plant_vanderwolf_images.jpg?itok=HO9EmseZ\" width=\"476\" height=\"317\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So, are we ready to accept nuclear energy? Remember that those countries that\u00a0stopped the development of\u00a0this energy source (such as Japan and Germany) are not decreasing their CO2 emissions (nor other kind of emissions).
