Heuristic methods in vertical transportation


Tall buildings have to optimize the cab dispatching to avoid passenger long waiting times. The cab dispatching problem in vertical transportation is a difficult optimization problem  because of  the different number of  ways this assignment can be done and the little time available to make the decision. Mondragon Unibertsitatea and Orona are working together in the development of this algorithm using genetic algorithms. The main innovation is to improve the quality of the answer. Furthermore, the development wants to be flexible enough to consider different objectives: energy consumption and service level offered to the passengers of the installation and also to take into consideration advanced passenger traffic flows patterns.

One on-going PhD theses and  6 Final Projects along 4 years have take part in this joint research project , being some of them funded by the Department of Industry, through Etortek (Net0Lift: Efficient & Intelligent Lift)and Saiotek research programs (IVAL-Infraestructure for the validation and improvement of a Elevator Group Control System).

The 2nd Symposium on Lift & Escalator Technologies, http://www.liftsymposium.org/, held on Northampton, England, gave us the opportunity to be in touch with the industry experts . The paper titled «Origin Destination Matrix Estimation And Prediction In Vertical Transportation» was presented by Maite Beamurgia, the student currently developing her PhD entitled “Artificial Intelligent methods in vertical transportation”.
